A Carbon Neutral Event
New Year’s Eve is a time to think about our future and take action against climate change. In 2008, City of Sydney became Australia’s first carbon neutral council and continues to plan Sydney New Year’s Eve as part of our commitment to creating a Sustainable Sydney.
A sustainable Sydney New Years Eve is achieved by:
- Buying carbon credits to offset all emissions from the event.
- Recycling 80 per cent of all rubbish collected (about 20 per cent is non recyclable waste).
- Using recycled water to clean the streets.
- Reusing props and scenic designs
- Encouraging everyone to take public transport or walk to events and leave the car at home.
- Measuring the Impact of Sydney New Year’s Eve. The City of Sydney will again be conducting a Carbon Audit to calculate and offset the greenhouse gas emissions generated by Sydney New Year’s Eve, to ensure the event is carbon neutral.
The Carbon Audit will measure all emission sources the City of Sydney can control for the event through policy, technology choice or direct authority.
Live Green to help make Sydney a more liveable and sustainable city.
