Lord Mayor's Picnic

5pm – 9.15pm

The Lord Mayor’s Picnic is an event for 1,000 children with specific needs and their carers to enjoy the 9pm family fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

There will be plenty of entertainment for children of all ages and abilities.

Guests are encouraged to dress in character and wear comfortable shoes.

Free food and drinks will be available. Guests can also bring their own food. The event doesn’t cater for food allergies. To request a dietary list of food served, email us. A microwave will be available.

There will be friendly volunteers on site to help you have an enjoyable event.

No alcohol, glass, styrofoam, pets, smoking or drones allowed.

Site entry

Enter at the Government House Gate on Conservatorium Road, near the Conservatorium of Music. Look for the sign marked Gate B on Macquarie Street.

The entry gate closes at 7pm.

Guests will receive a wristband when entering which must be worn at all times.

Getting here

Public transport is the best way to get around on New Year’s Eve.

St James train station is 1 kilometre away (15 minute walk).  There are lifts at St James Station and via the Elizabeth Street tunnel.

Martin Place train station is 600 metres away, about a 10 minute walk. For an accessible pathway, use the lift in Martin Place, between Phillip and Macquarie streets.

Road closures will be in place.


The area is levelled and grassed.

The Parade Ground is 300 metres from the fireworks viewing area. The route is dimly lit, but event staff will assist.

Accessible toilets and a change room with height-adjustable table will be available.

Hearing loop units will be available.

Auslan interpreters will translate the on-stage performance.

An audio description of the night’s events will be broadcast on ABC Extra through the ABC Radio app or digital radio.

Seating will be limited. Picnic rugs are recommended.

Go to the First Aid tent if you have been separated from your child or have lost property.

What to bring


  • Photo ID (for adults).
  • Ticket.
  • If you have been allocated parking, display your pass in the windscreen of your car.


  • Map and camera.
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunblock.
  • Picnic rug.
  • Raincoat.
  • Jacket.
  • Mobile phone.
  • Any special food or medication you may need.

Media and photographs

There may be photographers and film crews at the Lord Mayor’s Picnic, capturing the event for the City and as part of the official broadcast on the ABC.  The images and footage are used by the City and those authorised by the City for a range of purposes including marketing and promotion.

By attending the event, you consent to being photographed or filmed by the City, its partners, sponsors or other authorised persons in any and all media throughout the world and you waive any claims you may have in connection with this use.

If you are to be featured in any of the images or interviewed in the footage, you will be asked to sign a consent and release. You can decline any such feature photography or interview.
