Sustainability

Keep our city sparkling.  Leave nothing to waste

The City of Sydney is certified carbon neutral for its operations under the Climate Active offset standard and is committed to reducing carbon emissions from operations and events. We are committed to leading industry best practice, including reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill. Waste is a big contributor to climate change and in 2022 contributed 15% of greenhouse gas emissions originating from within our local area.

We work with a range of stakeholders and suppliers to present Sydney New Year’s Eve and we encourage and value partners who share a commitment to achieving leading environmental performance for a sustainable future. We also encourage attendees to jump on board and help make Sydney New Year’s Eve more sustainable to keep our city sparkling and leave nothing to waste.

How can I help make Sydney New Year’s Eve more sustainable?

Consider the following when planning your night.

  • Use public transport to get to the event

  • View the event program on your phone instead of printing

  • Bring your food in reusable containers

  • Bring a reusable water bottle and refill it at one of the many water stations

  • If you plan to order takeaway food and beverages, bring your own reusable cutlery, cup, napkins, containers and bags instead of single-use items from the vendor

  • Put your recyclables in one of our many recycling bins

  • Put general waste in a bin or take it home with you
